Sir,

I have the honour to request your advice in a matter in reference to which I am perplexed, not knowing what course to adopt. The enclosed letters forwarded for your perusal are selected from a number of others to hand from Europeans and Natives, informing me of Mr. Campbell's condemning my interference at Waiapu in mediating the late difficulty, as boastful and unauthorised.

I am very much averse to making any official complaint against Mr. Campbell, but I am afraid trouble will ensue, and the Government wonder why I remain supine in the matter. I am, and always have been quite willing to assist Mr. Campbell, but he seems causelessly jealous of my interference.

I presume to ask your advice, confidentially, in this matter, as Mr. McLean instructed me to apply to you in cases of emergency.

Affairs at Waiapu are very much unsettled.

I expect further letters by to-morrow's mail.

I have the honour to be, Sir
Yours most faithfully (Signed)
T.W. Porter.
To His Honour J.D. Ormond.
