Letter from H.T. Kemp to Donald McLean Esq. dated 5th. December 1856.

Waimate Bay of Islands
5th. December 1856.

My dear McLean,

I forward by this opportunity, a copy of my Official, in reference to the money for the Tara-ire, and the other Block. Everything has been ready for some days, and shall be glad to have it settled out of hand. I fully expect it by the steamer; but send again in the event of the letter having miscarried in the first instance. I hope they won't be slow to hand out the cash.

Tomairangi's letter is also returned, with Report. He brought with him a considerable mob of shabby fellows, to make a show, but he found me better prepared than he anticipated. I believe the truth is really this. Tomairangi and some of his companions have been, for some time, living at Kaipara, in Mr. Atkin's employ; and are pretty much involved; and this has been an effort to raise the wind. He wanted the money off hand, and said that you told him I had money here to pay him with. I believe they are a bad lot.

Mr. Clarke, the Surveyor, is here at work for private hands; and as he is likely to have some leisure time. I have engaged him to survey in the neighbourhood of the Bay; but he gets plenty of private employment, which he almost prefers to Government.

Believe me, faithfully yours (Signed)
H.T. Kemp.
