10 Sept. 1872

My dear Sir,

Referring to the interview with Auckland members yesterday at which I promised to send an answer after conferring with my colleagues.

I have now to request that you will convey to the gentlemen who did me the honor of waiting upon me my regret that I cannot comply with their wishes.

While desirous at all times to render all the assistance I can to the country as I have hitherto done no good could result from allying myself with those with whom I could not cordially work.

An additional reason for declining the flattering offer made to me is that I could not desert my party.

I remain, My dear Sir, Yours very truly,
Donald McLean.
