SUPPOSED QUANTITY OF POWDER POSSESSED BY THE NATIVES BETWEEN THE TANIWHA A SETTLEMENT AT THE NORTH AND OTUMATUA AT THE SOUTH A DISTANCE OF SEVENTY MILES.

Otumatua 30 Certain Warea 10 Mokutunu 5 Wareatea 3 Certain Umuroa 5 Waiana 5 Te Ngauru 3 Kurukwhati 10 Six of these are kept at a Pah near Waimate Moutiti 2 Pukeka 5 The 93 Casks of powder possessed by the Taranaki Tribe south of the Sugarloaf Islands was principally obtained in exchange for Flax of which they at one period dressed considerable quantities some was also received in payment for land and as presents from the Natives at Cooks Straits. Pungaherehere 4 Waitaha 1 Tepoku 2 Kapuaia 2 Kaihihi 1 Ruatera 5 93 Ngamotu 8 Pukatapu 7 Their fire arms are of a good description and may be computed at 3 Muskets to every two men. Waitara 6 Taniwha 2 They have also a good supply of pig Lead. The fire arms of the Puketapus are in an indifferent state of repair. 23 93 116.
