From: Inward family correspondence - Annabella McLean (sister), Reference Number MS-Papers-0032-0816 (50 digitised items). Letters written from Scotland (Edinburgh, Glenorchy Manse, Stranraer) prior to her arrival in New Zealand in Jan 1864 on the Wild Duck; afterwards from Maraekakaho, Napier and Wellington. One letter was written in Sep 1858 during a visit to her sister Flora Ann Conway in North Wales.

Have not written you for a longtime. It is so uncertain where to find you that I think it best not to write until you have finished all your native districts. Now that the Ormonds

are in possession of the house your mind will be free of anxiety in that respect. They are all well up here. Alick remarkably well. Flax is the great topic of discussion. We are in the midst of heavy rain which is a great boon. The country everywhere is luxuriant with clover. Would be very content here if there were a decent Scotch couple to take care of the place. Perhaps you will see someone you would like to send when in Auckland.

Everyone advised me to go to Wellington instead of here. This is quiet and I have few wants and incur no expenses and doing Alick good but with all there is a void which costs me many a tear.
