Private. Government House, New Zealand,

15th Sept. 1873

My dear Mr. McLean,

Many thanks for your telegrams which are interesting. As for cattle lifting you and I dont mind that; but there does seem to be an uneasy and dissatisfied feeling about the legislation.

It is natural that natives should be nervous about changes: at the same time they themselves ask for some. It seems a pity that Wi Tako should be so badly reported; could it not be arranged that he should get his speech written out in Maori and then that it should be literally translated for Hansard? I am told that his best points were not interpreted at all, and no doubt it must annoy him and his friends.

I should like to have some conversation with you upon these current matters. Can you spare time from the House for a couple of hours to dine tonight or tomorrow at 7 o'clock.

Yours sincerely,
James Ferugsson

The service upon which the Luna may be wanted is to fetch Judge Richmond from Nelson: as the points of law involved in the extradition case are rather too important to be settled by a single judge. I do not yet know however whether Judge Richmond is well enough or otherwise able to come. Please not to mention this. J.F.
