My dear McLean,

You will get the Native news by the papers I send. Old Tamati's expedition to the confiscated boundary is not very intelligible but the old man is a mystic himself, they have gone in peace however.

Old Te Hira has had a favorable judgment in the Waihi case and it may be hoped that he and the old witch Mere Kuru will be more manageable in future. They see bent upon keeping us out of Ohinemuri but may perhaps be persuaded to let the Telegraph to Tauranga go through and if so, that will be one step more in advance.

Can you do anything in the way of employment for Mackay. He is a man that ought to be kept on the Government side, for he has great energy and much influence with the natives. His wife wishes to get him out of Auckland for a while and I think it would be well for him. I like him myself very much and should be sorry to see him lose himself and the chances of turning to good the force and talent that is in him.

We have the English Telegrams this morning. The war seems farther from its close than ever - worse luc for us. If we had the money and the men that are expended in one month we should be made a nation in a twinkling and cease to be troubled about Te Kooti or old Tamati.

Yours very truly,
Daniel Pollen.

Mr. Mainwaring has just called to ask about his license as interpreter which he is very anxious to get.
