On the Company's chart of this settlement signed by Mr. Commissioner Spain, Col. Wakefield and yourself you will find that the two sections which form this station are marked out as the ''Wesleyan Mission Reserve''.
On the arrival of Governor FitzRoy again to investigate the Land claims of this district that portion of the Reserve which lies to the Eastward of the creek was awarded by him to a native called Rangikapuao in return for which the half of the setion N. was appropriated to the use of the Mission. The above concession was privately made without our knowledge or consent and includes the only spot on the whole station whence firewood is obtainable.
Recently however a son of the above native called to Hape or ''Bob'' has thought proper to lease away the plot of ground in question to a European called Loveridge for the term of 21 years, by virtue of which the said Loveridge has intruded himself upon the soil.
Under these circumstances may I request you to advise me
1. As to what kind of title the Wesleyan Mission possesses to the land in dispute.
2. As to whether ''Bob'' or any other Natives has a right to lease it away, except to the New Zealand Company, and
3. As to what steps it lies in my power to take, to secure the Mission property from the encroachments of others.
I beg to remain, Sir,
(On behalf of the Wesleyan Missionary Society)
Your obedient servant,
H. Hanson Turton
