My dear Sir,

The long expected Steamer arrived last night and leaves this day for Manukao. I have nothing new to communicate by her in reference to our native affairs which remain as last reported, owing to Katatore refusing to leave his pa.

An attempt has been made to magnify Hone Ropiha's offence with the view of getting him struck off the list of Assessors as a useless and troublesome man. All I have to say is, that I know nothing about Hone beyond his excellent qualities and important public services -

I have this moment settled the cattle case but not the feelings of the natives against J. B. White, who in my opinion was the cause of this rurururu. The difficulty is to lay hold of that man, few doubt his proceedings, which is the reason the natives accuse us of sheltering him.

The mail is closing and you will I am sure excuse this hasty note.

Faithfully yours
H. Halse
To:- McLean Esq.
